Meet our Consultants
Mr A A Henderson
Mr Alistair Henderson was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Royal Bolton Hospital in 1993. He specialises in lower limb surgery. His special interest is in Foot and Ankle Surgery.
Mr Henderson underwent his orthopaedic training in the North West. During this time, he obtained his MD, as the MRC Research Fellow. He also undertook Fellowships in Switzerland and Seattle, in order to study with world experts.
He was a Member of the Scientific Committee of the British Orthopaedic Foot Surgical Society between from 2004 -2006. He is the current Secretary of the British Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society.
He is an Examiner for the F.R.C.S. (Orthopaedics) and he is a member of the AO/ASIF Faculty.
Mr S P Hodgson
Mr Steve Hodgson qualified from Manchester Medical School in 1981 and completed his orthopaedic training in the North West and North America. During his training he spent time as the Sir Harry Platt research Fellow and a Charnley Trust Travelling Fellow, visiting world experts in Upper Limb Surgery in Boston, New York and Texas.
He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital in 1993 introducing a wide range of upper limb surgery to Bolton. He is a regular invited speaker at local, national and international meetings on all aspects of upper limb surgery.
He is Vice-Chairman of the North West Complex Upper Limb Surgery Clinical Network and Treasurer of the North West Surgical Hand Society.
Mr G J Shepard
Mr Gordon Shepard is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon specialising in surgery of the lower limb at the Royal Bolton Hospital, Bolton. His particular fields of interest are sports injuries of the lower limb and knee surgery.
He was appointed as one of the Sports Orthopaedics Consultants to the Commonwealth Games in Manchester in 2002. He regularly performs arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery of the knee, knee ligament reconstruction and joint replacement surgery and has a particular interest in joint replacement in younger people.
He qualified from Leicester Medical School in 1990 and undertook training in Leicester, Liverpool and Manchester before being appointed as a Consultant in August 2001. During his training he undertook several travelling fellowships to Boston, Denver and Adelaide to work with acknowledged world experts in aspects of knee surgery, and since becoming a consultant has undertaken similar visits to South Africa, Switzerland and the United States.
Mr Shepard regularly attends and presents his research at local, national and international conferences. He is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and ESSKA, the National and European Societies of Knee Surgery.
Mr P R Wykes
Mr Phil Wykes is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Upper Limb Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital, Bolton. He has particular interests in arthroscopic (keyhole) and day case surgery of the shoulder and elbow, as well as hand and wrist disorders.
He qualified from Bristol University in 1993 and undertook his orthopaedic training in Bristol, South Africa and the North West. He was appointed Consultant at the Royal Bolton Hospital in 2005.
He has undertaken advanced fellowship training in shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist surgery, including arthroscopic techniques. He has visited national centres of excellence as well as world experts in France and the USA in order to gain further experience.
He presents and publishes his research at national meetings. He is a member of the British Elbow & Shoulder Society (BESS) and the British Hand Surgery Society (BSSH).
Mr J W Jarratt
Mr Jeremy Jarratt qualified from St. Andrews and Manchester University in 1993. He completed his specialist training in Manchester, and undertook a knee fellowship at the Royal Bolton Hospital, which included visits to several of the leading knee surgeons in the United States.
He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Royal Bolton Hospital specialising in lower limb and spinal surgery. He has a specialist interest in knee surgery, including total knee replacement, revision knee replacement and all aspects of sports knee injuries, including arthroscopy, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions and complex ligament reconstructions. He performs hip replacement and hip resurfacings, as well as all aspects of lower limb surgery.
He is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).
Mr J J Henderson
Mr John Henderson is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital, Bolton. His particular fields of interest are children's orthopaedics, trauma, hip and knee replacements and foot surgery.
He qualified at the University of Manchester in 1976 and undertook Orthopaedic training in Manchester, Salford, Preston, Wrightington and Sydney, Australia.
He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital in 1990 and is also the Royal College of Surgeons of England tutor, at the Royal Bolton Hospital.
He has continued to lecture and publish research in adult and children's orthopaedics and trauma and is a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association and member of the British Society for Children's Orthopaedic Surgery (BSCOS).
Mr M J Fehily
Mr Max Fehily is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital. His main area of interest is in hip and knee joint reconstruction.
He studied medicine at Trinity College Dublin and completed his initial surgical training both there and in the UK. He underwent specialist orthopaedic training in the North West and has a strong interest in research and training. During his training, he gained a Masters in Orthopaedic Engineering, published in the leading orthopaedic journals and is involved in teaching at both a regional and national basis.
He has undertaken fellowship training as well as a number of visits to internationally recognised centres, in both the UK and the US. Since being appointed as a consultant, he has continued to develop his practice particularly in the field of hip surgery, ranging from standard hip replacements to resurfacing, uncemented implants, ceramics and the management of complex hip trauma.
He is a member of The British Hip Society, The British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) and The British Orthopaedic Association (BOA).
Mr A J Banks
Mr Tony Banks trained on the North West Circuit in the Academic Unit based at Hope Hospital, Salford. In conjunction with the Academic Unit, he was involved in the development of the first formal Sports Injury Clinic in the North West, during the late 1970's.
He completed a research thesis in the Department of Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering for Salford University entitled "Stabilisation of the Spine" and has since maintained an interest in this subject.
He was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital in 1981 and finally retired from the Health Service in April 2006.
He currently maintains his interest in knee surgery and is involved with a wide variety of sporting organisations providing opinions and surgical solutions.
He is a qualified coach and internationally accredited competition referee in weight lifting, and to this day, trains three times a week.
He has been heavily involved in the training and development of Orthopaedic Surgeons and he is co-author to the curriculum for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.
He currently acts as an adviser to the Healthcare Commission for clinical complaints and has been elected to the Council of the British Orthopaedic Association for a two- year period from 2008 through to 2010.
He has regularly published work over the years particularly in the sporting field.

Mr W G Ryan
Mr Bill Ryan was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital, Bolton in 1997. His practice includes General Orthopaedics and Trauma, however, he has a special interest in all aspects of knee surgery.
He qualified in 1986, and undertook Orthopaedic training in Manchester, for a period of which, he was the Harry Platt Research Fellow. He is an Advanced Trauma Life Support instructor and an honorary lecturer at the University of Salford’s School of Healthcare Professions.
He was awarded the degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) for his research into ligament injuries of the knee, and is collaborating in further research with the School of Biological Sciences, at the University of Manchester and Salford, into the long term follow up of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction and complications of patello-femoral replacement.
He has given presentations to learned societies and published papers.
He is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).
Mr J G Warner
Mr James Warner is a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon specialising in surgery of the upper limb (shoulder to hand). He performs both arthroscopic (keyhole) and open surgery of the upper limb including joint replacement, stabilisation procedures, nerve decompression and joint contracture release. He has a particular interest in upper limb trauma (soft tissue injuries and fractures) and specialises in upper limb fracture fixation.
Mr Warner qualified from St. Andrews (1984) and Manchester Universities (1987) before embarking on his surgical training in the North West. His final fellowship year consisted of a 6-month National Fellowship in Hand Surgery in Manchester and a 6-month fellowship in the Upper Limb Unit at Wrightington Hospital.
Mr Warner has been a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the Royal Bolton Hospital since October 1998. In his consultant practice he has travelled visiting surgeons in Europe who are recognised as national and international experts in their field.
Mr Warner is involved in research and his work has been presented at regional and national meetings. He is currently involved in research into wrist fracture fixation. He is a member of the British Hand Society and the North West Shoulder and Elbow and North West Hand Societies. Mr Warner is currently the Honorary Secretary of the North West Orthopaedic Association.
